How to Use This Guide

Choosing the right smart home products requires understanding how they communicate, what platforms they support and whether they will work with what you already have. This guide is designed to help you navigate compatibility confidently before you buy.

Part 1 — Understanding Smart Home Protocols

Protocols are the languages smart home devices use to communicate. Understanding the differences helps you build a system that works seamlessly rather than one that requires multiple incompatible apps and hubs.

Matter

What it is: Matter is the newest and most important smart home standard. Developed collaboratively by Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and hundreds of other technology companies, Matter is an open-source, IP-based protocol designed to make smart home devices work across all major ecosystems without compatibility barriers.

How it communicates: Over your home Wi-Fi network (802.11) and via Thread (see below)

What you need: A Matter controller — this can be an Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub, Amazon Echo (4th generation or later) or Samsung SmartThings Hub

Key benefits:

  • Works across Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings simultaneously
  • Local control — devices work without internet connection
  • Strong security with end-to-end encryption
  • Future-proof — the standard is backed by the entire industry
  • No vendor lock-in

PureNode recommendation: Where possible choose Matter-compatible products. They represent the best long-term investment in your smart home.


Thread

What it is: Thread is a low-power mesh networking protocol that runs alongside Matter. Thread devices form a self-healing mesh network in your home — meaning if one device goes offline, the network routes around it automatically.

How it communicates: Uses the IEEE 802.15.4 radio standard — the same frequency as Zigbee (2.4GHz) but a completely different protocol

What you need: A Thread Border Router — included in Apple HomePod mini, Apple HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), Google Nest Hub (2nd generation) and Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro

Key benefits:

  • Extremely low power consumption — ideal for battery-powered sensors and devices
  • Self-healing mesh extends coverage throughout large homes
  • Low latency — fast response times
  • Works locally without internet

Best for: Sensors, smart locks, light switches and other devices where battery life and reliability are critical


Zigbee

What it is: Zigbee is a mature, widely-adopted low-power mesh networking protocol used by thousands of smart home devices globally. It predates Matter and Thread but remains highly reliable and well-supported.

How it communicates: IEEE 802.15.4 radio standard at 2.4GHz — mesh network topology

What you need: A Zigbee hub or coordinator. Compatible hubs include Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Echo (4th generation with built-in Zigbee), Philips Hue Bridge, IKEA Dirigera and Home Assistant with a Zigbee USB coordinator

Key benefits:

  • Massive device ecosystem — thousands of compatible products
  • Proven reliability over many years
  • Low power consumption
  • Good mesh networking performance

Limitations:

  • Requires a dedicated Zigbee hub or coordinator
  • Not natively compatible with Matter without a bridge
  • Some Zigbee implementations are proprietary and only work within one brand's ecosystem

Best for: Customers already invested in a Zigbee ecosystem who want to expand their device range


Z-Wave

What it is: Z-Wave is a proprietary mesh networking protocol specifically designed for smart home automation. It operates at 920MHz in Australia — a frequency with excellent wall penetration and minimal interference with Wi-Fi networks.

How it communicates: Sub-GHz radio (920MHz in Australia/ANZ region) — mesh network topology

What you need: A Z-Wave hub or controller. Compatible options include Samsung SmartThings, Fibaro Home Center, Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Home Assistant with a Z-Wave USB controller

Key benefits:

  • Operates at 920MHz — excellent range and wall penetration
  • No interference with Wi-Fi or Zigbee networks
  • Strong interoperability — Z-Wave Alliance certification ensures cross-brand compatibility
  • Highly reliable for critical applications like security and locks

Limitations:

  • Smaller device ecosystem than Zigbee
  • Requires a dedicated Z-Wave hub
  • Slightly higher product cost than Wi-Fi or Zigbee alternatives

Best for: Security systems, smart locks and applications where reliability and interference-free operation are paramount


Wi-Fi (Direct Connection)

What it is: Many smart home devices connect directly to your home Wi-Fi network without requiring a separate hub or protocol.

What you need: A stable home Wi-Fi network. Most smart home devices require a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Many home routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz — ensure your device connects to the correct band during setup.

Key benefits:

  • No hub required
  • Easy setup via manufacturer app
  • Works with any home Wi-Fi router

Limitations:

  • Increases load on your Wi-Fi network — a concern in larger homes with many devices
  • Typically requires internet connection for remote control and cloud features
  • Local control not always available
  • Security depends on manufacturer's cloud infrastructure

Best for: Simple setups with a small number of devices where ease of installation is the priority


Part 2 — Voice Assistant Compatibility

Amazon Alexa

Alexa is compatible with the widest range of smart home devices of any voice assistant platform. Most smart home products sold in Australia support Alexa either natively or via a skill.

Compatible protocols: Wi-Fi, Zigbee (via Echo 4th gen built-in hub), Matter (via Echo 4th gen and later), Thread (via Echo 4th gen as Thread Border Router)

Best for: Customers who want maximum device compatibility and an established voice control platform

Australian availability: Amazon Echo devices are available in Australia. Alexa's Australian English voice recognition is excellent.


Google Home and Google Assistant

Google Home offers strong smart home integration with a clean app interface and excellent Australian English voice recognition.

Compatible protocols: Wi-Fi, Matter (via Google Nest Hub 2nd gen and Nest Wi-Fi Pro), Thread (via Google Nest Hub 2nd gen as Thread Border Router)

Best for: Customers already in the Google ecosystem with Android devices and Google Nest speakers

Australian availability: Google Nest devices are widely available in Australia through major retailers and purenode.com.au


Apple HomeKit and Siri

Apple HomeKit offers the strongest privacy and security of any major smart home platform. All HomeKit communication is end-to-end encrypted and Apple does not have access to your home data.

Compatible protocols: Wi-Fi, Thread (via HomePod mini, HomePod 2nd gen, Apple TV 4K as Thread Border Router and Matter controller), Matter

Best for: Apple household users with iPhones, iPads and Macs who prioritise privacy and a premium experience

Australian availability: Apple HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K are available in Australia and work excellently as smart home hubs

Note on HomeKit compatibility: Not all smart home products support HomeKit. Apple's certification requirements are more stringent than other platforms. Always check product pages for HomeKit compatibility before purchasing if this is your preferred platform.


Samsung SmartThings

SmartThings is a powerful smart home platform that supports the broadest range of protocols of any consumer hub — including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter and Wi-Fi in a single hub.

Compatible protocols: Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread (via Aeotec Smart Home Hub or Samsung SmartThings Station)

Best for: Power users who want to integrate devices across multiple protocols in a single app and automation platform

Australian availability: SmartThings hubs are available in Australia. The SmartThings app is fully supported in Australian English.

Part 4 — Australian Electrical Standards

240V AC Mains Power

All Australian homes operate on 240V AC power at 50Hz. This is an important consideration when purchasing smart home products:

  • Always purchase Australian or ANZ-market products — products designed for the US market operate on 120V and are not compatible with Australian mains power without a transformer
  • All PureNode products are supplied in Australian market versions compatible with 240V 50Hz mains power where applicable
  • Check the RCM mark — products sold in Australia for connection to mains power must carry the Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM). All products in our range meet this requirement

Australian Wiring Standards

Australian electrical wiring uses the AS/NZS 3000 standard (the Wiring Rules). Key considerations for smart home installation:

Neutral wire requirement: Many smart switches and dimmers require a neutral wire in addition to the live (active) and earth wires. Older Australian homes may not have a neutral wire in the wall switch cavity. Check your wiring before purchasing smart switches — or ask your electrician to assess.

Lutron Caséta exception: Lutron Caséta dimmers are designed to work without a neutral wire in most installations — making them an excellent choice for older Australian homes.

Double pole switching: Some Australian circuits use double pole switching (both active and neutral switched). Ensure any smart switch you purchase is compatible with your wiring configuration. When in doubt, ask a licensed electrician.


Part 5 — Building Your System

Starting From Scratch

If you are building a smart home from scratch we recommend the following approach:

  1. Choose your primary ecosystem first — Apple HomeKit, Google Home or Amazon Alexa. Your other device choices flow from this decision.
  2. Invest in a quality hub — a capable hub that supports multiple protocols gives you flexibility to add any device to your system.
  3. Start with lighting — smart lighting delivers the most visible and immediate impact and is the easiest category to get right.
  4. Add climate control — a smart thermostat typically delivers the fastest return on investment through energy savings.
  5. Layer in security — once your core system is established, security devices integrate cleanly.
  6. Automate — once devices are installed and named, build automations that make your home truly intelligent.

Expanding an Existing System

If you already have a smart home system and want to expand:

  1. Identify your current hub and protocols — check what hub you have and what protocols it supports before purchasing new devices
  2. Prioritise Matter-compatible additions — Matter devices will work with your existing system regardless of the hub brand
  3. Check app compatibility — ensure new devices can be managed within your existing app ecosystem
