At PureNode we believe that great smart home technology should be accessible to every Australian homeowner — including those who prefer to set things up themselves. This guide is designed to help you install and configure your PureNode products with confidence.

What Requires a Licensed Electrician?

Australian electrical regulations require that certain smart home installations be carried out by a licensed electrician. This is not optional — it is the law and exists to protect your safety and your home.

You must use a licensed electrician for:

Smart switches and dimmers that connect to your home's mains wiring
Hardwired smart keypads and control panels
In-ceiling smart lighting installations
Hardwired video doorbells
In-ceiling and in-wall speaker installations
Any product that requires connection to your home's electrical circuit

You can typically self-install:

Smart globes and LED strips that plug into standard fittings
Smart sensors (motion, temperature, door and window)
Smart locks (battery-powered models)
Smart plugs and power boards
Automation hubs and bridges that connect via Wi-Fi
Smart speakers and audio equipment

We also recommend asking your electrician if they have experience with smart home automation systems before engaging them. Not all electricians are familiar with Matter, Thread or smart home ecosystem configuration — experience matters.

DIY Installation Tips

For products you can self-install, here are our top tips for a smooth setup:

Before You Start

Read the manual first — every product ships with installation documentation. Read it fully before beginning.
Check your Wi-Fi — most smart home devices connect to the 2.4GHz band. If your router broadcasts a combined 2.4GHz and 5GHz network, you may need to temporarily separate them during setup.
Update your router firmware — an up-to-date router prevents most connectivity issues.
Download the app first — download and create an account in the manufacturer's app before unboxing the product.
Check compatibility — confirm the product is compatible with your existing smart home ecosystem before installation.

During Installation

Follow the order of steps exactly — smart home products often require a specific sequence of steps to pair correctly. Skipping steps is the most common cause of setup issues.
Keep your phone close to the device — during Bluetooth pairing keep your phone within 1 metre of the product.
Be patient with firmware updates — new products often download a firmware update during first setup. This can take several minutes. Do not interrupt the process.
Name your devices clearly — use descriptive names like "Living Room Ceiling Light" rather than "Light 1" to make voice control and automation more intuitive.

After Installation

Test all functions — test every function of the product including remote control, voice control and any automations before finalising installation.
Set up a backup — where possible configure a physical backup control method (such as a wall switch) in case of app or network issues.
Keep your receipts and documentation — store your order confirmation and warranty documentation in a safe place for future reference.

A Note on Australian Electrical Safety

PureNode takes electrical safety seriously. We only stock products that meet Australian and New Zealand electrical safety standards (RCM marked) where applicable. However the safety of your installation depends on correct installation practices.

Never attempt to work on mains electrical wiring unless you are a licensed electrician. Unlicensed electrical work is illegal in Australia, may void your home insurance and is genuinely dangerous.
